If you are a residential or small business consuming:

  • less than 160 MWh per year of electricity or
  • less than 10 terajoules per year of gas

and you choose to change energy retailers, you will not need to install a new meter(s).

You will be charged for energy based on the consumption measured by your existing gas and/or electricity meter under your contract(s).

All gas customers with an annual gas consumption of 10 terajoules or above must have an internal meter fitted (these are only very large industrial customers).

  • Some electricity retailers might choose to offer you a smart meter as part of your retail electricity contract.
  • All gas customers with an annual gas consumption of 10 terajoules or above must have an internal meter fitted.

Smart electricity meters provide more information such as when you use your electricity. Check the cost of the meter and any ongoing charges before you agree to change electricity meters.

  • A smart electricity meter will give you consumption data that may enable you to negotiate better prices, terms and conditions with electricity retailers.
  • It may also help you to better manage your electricity usage and lower your electricity costs.
  • In making a choice, you need to weigh up the potential benefits of having a smart meter installed (eg: lower electricity purchase prices, ability to help with managing your electricity demand) against any cost of a meter in the offer made to you.
